Recently, while scrolling through LinkedIn, I came across a post on Sigma Computing that piqued my interest, prompting me to look it up. After a few weeks, I finally had the opportunity to explore Sigma Computing through the WorkoutWednesday Sigma Challenges.

So before I delve into my experience, let me explain what Sigma Computing is.

What is Sigma Computing?

Sigma is a cloud-native analytics platform with a spreadsheet-like interface, enabling business users to collaborate and make data-driven decisions via self-service business intelligence. It requires no coding or specialized training to integrate new data, conduct real-time “what-if” analysis, and address natural language queries.

My initial thought

I jumped into my first WorkoutWednesday 2024 Week 1 challenge provided by Katrina Menne.

I love that the layout was so easy to navigate, and completing this challenge took me around 15 minutes, which is great considering I was a total newbie to Sigma Computing.

With my prior experience in Tableau and Power BI, I can easily say that Sigma considered some points and made it simpler for the users. A few points to start with:

  • The simple page layout makes it easier to add elements (table, title, visualization etc).
  • One request that I hear from Tableau users is an option to change the marker size on a line/area chart. We can of course do that with dual axis but Sigma made it convenient with the formatting option.
  • Dual axis or using multiple measures on a chart is easy in Sigma.
  • Adding and removing grid lines is straightforward.
  • Creating Drill Down is a direct option under elements.
  • Easy to create a switch measure chart using a segment control.

If you're new to Sigma or aiming to grasp the fundamentals, I highly recommend giving these WorkoutWednesday Sigma Challenges a try.
