My experience and tips for preparation

I have over 6 years of experience with Tableau and during this time I have played various roles, from Tableau Developer to Data Consultant. So I have good experience with Tableau and recently decided to attempt Tableau Certified Consultant.

Despite my experience, there were still areas that I was unclear on, so I went through a good amount of preparation. I’m relieved to say that I passed!

Before I go over my experience and preparation, let me give you an overview of how this exam differs from the Data Analyst.

Exam Overview

Tableau Certified Consultant tests the individual’s consultant skills on Tableau Products. So it is not just restricted to Tableau Desktop but also Prep Builder, Server, Cloud and Bridge.

  • Duration: 120 minutes
  • Registration fee: USD $250 plus applicable taxes as required by local law
  • Exam Requirements: Good number of years of experience with Tableau Products as a consultant (a minimum of 1 year suggested by Tableau).
If you majorly work with only Tableau Desktop or Prep then I would suggest going with Tableau Certified Data Analyst instead.
  • Exam Format: Knowledge-based: 40–45 multiple-choice and multiple-select items; Performance-based: 6–8 hands-on lab tasks

The details of the Exam are well described in their Exam Guide below:

My Preparation Journey

Since I have worked as a Tableau consultant, I was already aware of some of the Tableau products. However, I had limited knowledge of Migration from Tableau Server to Cloud and also the intricacies of Tableau Server processes. So I definitely had to brush up on those concepts.

My first suggestion is to thoroughly review the exam guide and suggested links of Tableau Knowledge based articles and whitepapers. Make sure that you understand the concepts of these products because the questions won’t be straightforward, but rather a scenario based.

Sample question pattern: https://www.actual4test.com/exam/TCC-C01-questions#

Since I am a visual learner, I like going through videos over reading to grasp concepts faster.

Make sure to go through some of these if you’re unclear about the concepts:

These are just a few handful videos that helped me better understand some of the concepts.

As I wrap up this post, I hope I was able to give you some insights into this certification and tips to get started. If you still have questions, feel free to reach out to me on Linkedln.
